Fixed prosthetics, cemented onto existing teeth or implants
A number of dental problems can be corrected with crowns and bridges, such as damaged or missed teeth, restore the look of a tooth that’s been knocked out, repair the appearance of cracked teeth. Whether you need a crown or a bridge depends on whether you have one tooth or several that need to be repaired or replaced. Crowns and bridges will enhance the appearance of a single tooth or teeth without using extraction.
Crowns
Used to replace a single tooth
Crowns are worn to cover or cap an impaired tooth, which will improve the appearance of that tooth. They can be placed over the top of an implant to create a more tooth-like shape and can be matched to blend in with the rest of your natural teeth.
A crown is actually a prosthetic tooth, normally porcelain or ceramic and can be designed to individual patients’ particular needs by adjusting the shape, colour and texture of its teeth so that it matches their other teeth. In certain cases, gold alloy is also used in order to increase the strength of a crown. When a tooth is fractured or cracked, the dentist uses crowns that give teeth strength and help make them look better.
The Process
It involves cutting the damaged tooth into a smaller size, including removal of any decayed teeth in order to restore its structure for crown support. The crown will be installed on top and pressed into place, which acts as a cover over the re-casted tooth.

Bridges
Used to replace a missing tooth or teeth
Where a crown replaces a tooth, a bridge is used to “bridge the gap” between missing teeth.
In order to replace one or several missing teeth, bridges are commonly used. They’re flowing in and out of space where the teeth are missing. To the natural teeth or implants in this empty area, bridges are inserted. These teeth are known as abutments, and they’re used to anchor the bridge. On the crowns that cover the abutments a replacement tooth is affixed, referred to as pontic. You’ll have choices of materials to put on the bridges, like crowns.
Your dentist may be able to tell you which one is most appropriate based on your location for lost teeth, its functionality, aesthetic considerations and cost. The colour of your own teeth can be matched by porcelain or Ceramic bridges.
